It’s a documentary

The Dunphy’s and Prichett’s talk to the camera as if they’re being interviewed because the show was initially conceived as a documentary shot by ‘Geert Floorjte’. He was a Dutch filmmaker who lived with the Pritchett’s years ago as a teenage exchange student that had come back to the U.S as an adult. The show’s creators Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd decided Geert’s character was unnecessary but still liked the ‘interview’ effect.
