When it comes to the world of Harry Potter and the complex and complicated history that it has, it’s no surprise that new theories seem to pop up all the while.

It’s a great excuse to re-read all of the wonderful books from J.K Rowling, but sometimes a new piece of information or theory is published that completely changes the way we look at the wizarding world and all things Harry Potter.

Recently a fan took to Tumblr to share their theory, arguing that it’s possible that Harry’s aunt, Petunia Dursley, whom we all dislike for her treatment of Harry, was actually a witch this whole time and we just didn’t realise.

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, when Harry’s aunt Marge calls Harry’s mum a ‘bad egg’ and mocks the Potter family, it results in a glass shattering in her hand, which is assumed to have been caused by Harry. However, it could have also been Petunia, angered by Marge disrespecting her sister, but she allowed Harry to think it was him.

This theory began way back in 2004, when J.K Rowling got caught out. When questioned as to whether Petunia was a Squib (someone born to a wizarding family, but who hasn’t got any magical powers themselves) Rowling replied with:

“Good question. No, she is not, but—. No, she is not a Squib. She is a Muggle, but—. You will have to read the other books.

“You might have got the impression that there is a little bit more to Aunt Petunia than meets the eye, and you will find out what it is. She is not a Squib, although that is a very good guess. Oh, I am giving a lot away here. I am being shockingly indiscreet.”

With the wizarding world ever growing, it was revealed that Petunia wrote a letter to Professor Dumbledore asking whether or not there had been a mistake in regards to Lily being accepted into Hogwarts. When Dumbledore replied saying there hadn’t been a mistake, Petunia turned her back on her sister and her magical abilities, dubbing the Potters ‘freaks’.

There isn’t much more information in the rest of the books, apart from Petunia’s odd goodbye to Harry, so fans are left to rely on others to fill in the gaps.

There is a chance that Petunia was actually jealous of her sister Lily for being accepted into Hogwarts and not her, which caused her to abandon magic.
